acrylic on canvas, 2012, 36"w x 48"h
Although much of my work is based on my surrounding landscape, removing detail and altering color allows me to create colorful, layered paintings that straddle the edge of abstraction. Natural phenomena—fall color, northern lights, a colorful sunset, a lunar eclipse, a thunderstorm or a certain quality of light—find their way into my work as expressions of an idea or a memory of landscape. Through the use of acrylic, collage and mixed media on various grounds, my projects have explored such diverse themes as democracy, cross-border politics, the AIDS pandemic, familial relationships and, always, the abstract nature of our universe.
