Oil and graphite on Mylar, 2017, 42"w x 64.5"h
There is a Polaroid photo of me, as a child, with my mother. On the back of the photo are the words “Mummy and me.” I have no memory of writing that nor of the photo being taken, yet the more I look at it, the more I remember other details from that time. Based on that photo, this painting is an exploration of memory, of loss and the attempt to relive moments from our past. I consciously use the film devices of cropping and repetition while also restricting the paint application to the negative space. The figures are absent but we still see their faded outlines.
