mixed media, 2013, 36"w x 36"h x 2"d
My works focus on my Peruvian heritage, specifically through observing culture, art, crafts and lifestyle in order to preserve cultural identity. I hope to bring awareness about indigenous people and their handmade art and craft works. I use a combination of optical art, the quality of the three-dimensional, abstract expressionism and metaphor. Rather than using traditional tools such as a painter’s brush, I used a bag to squeeze out the medium, cut the “threads” and pasted them on canvas. This meditative and playful process represents me as a Peruvian artist and represents the Peruvian handicraft workers, who use their hands rather than machines.
